Turkey, gravy, pumpkin pie; oh my! Thanksgiving is all about the food. Isn't it? That's what a lot of people think. And why not? Americans are big on tradition, and history has it that the first record of Thanksgiving was around 1621 when the Indians and the pilgrims shared a harvest feast. That meal was most likely not turkey, but wild goose or duck. And it is unlikely that there was any pumpkin pie. But who cares? We've got turkey and pumpkin pie now, and by golly, we're going to celebrate by stuffing our faces and our tummies until we can't possibly hold another ounce. It is also unlikely that very many of the pilgrims were overweight, and they did not worry about Thanksgiving weight gain. So while we celebrate a centuries-old occasion, we have modified it to a more modern idea of how things ought to be. In other words, we rewrite history to fit the way we do things today. The result is a society with health problems our ancestors did not even know about, much less had to deal with. There is a fine line between celebrating to the fullest and eating until we are full enough to pop. Can you lose weight over Thanksgiving? Of course, but don't set the bar too high. It might be wiser to be content to just not gain any weight. Join It's Not About the Diet for some ideas on How to Avoid Gaining Weight Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
