IMMUNE HEALTH SERIES:  Multiple sclerosis

There are over 80 types of autoimmune diseases, none of which are currently curable, and one of them is Multiple Sclerosis. Though the exact cause of such diseases is not known, it is commonly believed to be a combination of a person’s genetic predisposition for such disorders, combined with an environmental “trigger,” such as a microorganism or drug.

Multiple sclerosisis an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). Almost any neurological symptom can appear with the disease, and often progresses to physical and cognitive disability.

MS can affect anyone at the most productive time in their lives, and there are numerous famous people with MS from Michelle Obama's father, to TV host Montel Williams, to actress Terri Garr of Tootsie fame, who are all raising awareness of this mysterious autoimmune disease.

In this episode we discover the facts about MS: what it is, who gets it and why, what symptoms it can cause, and how it's diagnosed and treated.
