It's no secret students of color a 3-5 times more likely to be suspended or expelled from school at rates higher than their white counterparts. Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) is a youth organizing alliance for education and racial justice led by students of color from across the city of Chicago and Illinois.
In 2015 these students introduced Senate Bill 100, which was approved in the Illinois Senate with bipartisan support, represents perhaps the most aggressive and comprehensive effort ever made by a state to address the “school-to-prison pipeline.”
Maria DeGillo of the VOYCE Project (voyceproject.org) and Communities United breaks down the why's, hows. and significance of this effort as well as what is to come!
