A Prison Called School:  What Respect Means in the Classroom

We have all seen the headlines, articles, and videos of teachers and school officials disrespecting youth and vice versa.  Dr. Maure Ann Metzger, author of A Prison Called School: Creating Effective Schools for All Learners, joins Dr. T in the BULLPEN

Much of the dialogue about school reform has been from the needs of the system as it relates to teacher inputs and students outcomes.  This week we will discuss learning environment from the view of the learner.  Along with Dr. Metzger and Charlie will share:

  • their personal experience with lack of respect (from teachers/other students)
  • how and why it made a difference to be in a school/class where teachers respected students
  • what do students need/want from teachers regarding respect

Maure Ann Metzger has an Ed.D. in Leadership, a M.S. in School Psychology, and a B.S. in Special Education. During her 27 years in education, Maure Ann worked as an educator, school psychologist, and leader of district professional development. She primarily worked with high school students in alternative and special education settings. Maure Ann is an expert in the field of youth leadership and has an extensive speaker and training portfolio that includes presentations at the national, state, and local level. She and her students won numerous awards for their leadership program and projects.
