But he encountered that very Jesus whom he with zeal believed was a fraud. Jesus made a statement to Him from the heavens. NKJ. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" 5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But arise and go. It is hard for you to kick against the goads." 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do." The Commentary Critical and Explanatory says this-
It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks — The metaphor of an ox, only driving the goad deeper by kicking against it, is a classic one, and here forcibly expresses, not only the vanity of all his measures for crushing the Gospel, but the deeper wound which every such effort inflicted upon himself. We see that today in the public square, the private sector and even the church. Jesus does not change to adapt to culture. When people have that form of godliness but deny the power of the Gospel.And then say it doesn't work and it's irrelevant. It's because the Jesus they follow is of their own making. There is a remedy. The true knowledge of God illuminated by the power of The Holy Spirit and allowing Jesus to live His life through us.
