Doug Allan was born & raised in the suburbs of Chicago. In 1978 he dropped out of the fine arts program at University, to travel out west & play pioneer, living off the grid as a vegetarian homesteader doing freelance carpentry & hand crafts.

Shortly after the birth of his daughter, at age 21, Doug moved to Hawaii & studied architectural drafting, later shifting to computer graphics followed by opening Island Sign.

After 20 years of sign making, he was burning out on his career when he was contracted to make a sign for Awesomeness Fest Maui, back in 2011. That event pretty much takes a radical turn in his life, and in many ways, changed his life!
