McKinley Stockton, a Howard University graduate, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing (BBS), and a Ferrum Junior College graduate with an Associate Degree (AS) in Science, worked eleven years in the insurance industry in claims and in marketing. However, on March 1, 1992, he gave up the starched collars, boardroom meetings and memos for a smock, casual slacks, clippers and shears.

Stockton began this new era in his life when he opened up his first shop in Lorton, VA, “Mo Better Barber and Beauty Shop.” His staff consisted of one barber and one hair stylist. After approximately 4 1⁄2 years, the operation moved to Woodbridge, VA, where the cosmetology side of the business was discontinued; thus becoming “Mo Better Barber Shop.” At the onset, the shop had eight stations; thereafter, twelve (12).

Being quite pleased with this career change and the hair industry, Stockton wanted to do more for the profession of Barbering in the state of Virginia. In October of 1998, he began the blue prints for the formation of a Barber College. Well, fifteen years later he has a full fledged Barber College in Woodbridge, Virginia with 20 training positions and a growing line of clients and students.  And, as they say...the rest is history!
