What Does a Relationship Mean to a Narcissist?

For all the souls who I know, myself included, who have had or currently have a relationship with a narissist, what does it mean to the narcissist and why would you think they would waste their time when they seem so dissatified with their partners and spend all their energy taking away from a relationship that is right there rather than give to it and grow it?
