The New Employment Reality consists of the following principles that need to be embraced: Know yourself as “Me, Inc.,” possessing a portfolio of multiple skill sets, which can be applied in a variety of settings. Know the appropriate skill sets and functions in your fields of interest. Look for “what needs doing.” Forget job titles. Seek projects. Know your field. Stay current through professional associations, networking and knowledge management. Know your current skill sets (and your desired future) and identify a training process for developing competencies and knowledge that will increase your “value added” and your overall marketability. Know your customers and the changing demands of the marketplace. Demonstrate curiosity and initiative to learn about their real needs and changing values. Know your department or specialty and the changing demands of the marketplace, internal and external customers, vendors, and the politics of your industry.Know your competition and collaborators. Develop relations that foster mutual learning and respect brokering of services rendered.
