Born in the South during the 1940s, Pat Holland Conner was the African-American girl with the white skin. She lived with secrets and shame and dealt with intolerance from her family and the black and white communities. She grew up feeling unworthy and desperate to belong. Later, when her 3-year-old son wondered why she was white and the rest of the family black, she struggled to answer. At age 50, divorced and discouraged, Pat knew she had to make a change – a dramatic one. She did what few women and men have courage to do: she joined the Peace Corps. For seven years, she worked with communities in Asia and the Middle East, a time that brimmed with personal experiences and personal growth. To her amazement, she discovered that she fit in every way.Pat shares her journey of living a multicultural life in her new book, Doorways to Significance: Finding Peace, Power & Passion, which was recently released. Imbued with humor and grace, her stories transport readers to exotic parts of the world where acceptance transformed her life spiritually, emotionally and mentally from fear and alienation to love and acceptance. It is the rare person who will not be able to relate to some part of this memoir. Currently Pat Holland Conner owns Peaceful Path Consulting in Reno, NV, and counsels small businesses and individuals and promotes local education, self-growth and awareness events.
