Jessica Cowin was born when babies with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (or HLHS) were finally given a chance to live. Prior to the 1980s, babies born with HLHS had no options. Jessica's parents had an option -- a chance to save her life. Multiple surgeries would be required and life was uncertain for the baby who underwent those surgeries making Jessica a pioneer.
As a pioneer, Jessica has had to undergo what is sometimes referred to as the fourth staged surgery to treat HLHS. After going into congestive heart failure, Jessica had to have a heart transplant. Listen today as Jessica tells us about what transplants she has had to undergo, how she seizes the day and why she decided to write her memoirs.
