Juaquin Hawkins looked in the mirror and saw a disfigured face staring back at him. It was 9:15 a.m. and he was in a Townsville, Australia, hotel room. His fingers tingled, the right side of his body grew numb. He closed his eyes and prepared to die. It was New Year’s Day, 2008.

“Is this how I’m going to leave?” he wondered. “Doing something I love, away from my family?”

In the twilight of a professional basketball career, at 34 and in peak physical condition, the body he relied on to earn a living was giving way to a stroke. Throughout a life marked by false starts and dead ends, all he ever wanted was to provide for his family..
