Anthony Anderson:
I’ll Be Running the
NYC Marathon in 2011

Don’t be surprised to find a slimmed- down Anthony Anderson nudging across the finish line at next year’s New York City Marathon. The funnyman, who played Detective Kevin Bernard on Law & Order, talks exclusively with Film Festival Radio about his plans for the Nov. 6 race. “This is my word—this is the first time I’m telling anybody this publicly—I will be running in the 2011 New York City Marathon,” Anthony tells host Janice Malone. Among the celebs who ran the 2010 race were Today show weather anchor Al Roker, Howard Stern Show co-host Robin Quivers, Chilean miner Edison Pena, and almost Anthony. “I wanted to run in this year's race because I celebrated my 40th birthday and [competing] was going to be my gift to myself,” says Anthony, who marked that milestone on Aug. 15. “But I got sidetracked with so much work and couldn’t do it.” In 2002, Anthony was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. So this year he’s made an effort to improve his health, namely by dropping 40 pounds. He’s also been helping others afflicted with the disease. During November—which is National Diabetes Awareness Month —he’s working full-time as a spokesperson for the Fearless African Americans Connected and Empowered Diabetes campaign, a grassroots movement to promote awareness of diabetes throughout the African American community.
