You dont have to explain your troubles, losing a loved one is always difficult and it is completely understandable to recompense at a time after mourning, - I would have done no different May G-D bless you and your mother, because certainly she is now fully known to him. She is now within his fold, Steadfast onto your faith, let it be raised upon the rock.
