MIRROR MIRROR WHAT DO I SEE?

James 1:22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it - they will be blessed in what they do.

The mirror of God’s Word shows us the truth, but the mirror of our culture shows us a big lie. The mirror of our culture is like a mirror at the circus or fair. It distorts who we really are. And how does our culture try to define us? It tells us that we are what we have. We are what we do. We are where we live. We are how we look. We are what we wear. We are what we drive. We are what others say we are.

We are deceiving ourselves into thinking we are “good Christians” for having read the Bible today when, in fact, we are not living out our faith. The clear command is this; “Do what it [God’s teaching] says.”

The purpose of God’s Word is to give us true self-knowledge; it is a real mirror, and when we look at ourselves in it we see ourselves as God wants us to see ourselves and become transformed. To become the people God wants us to be we need to see ourselves as we really are
