ENVISION THIS: Music helps us cure our culture’s sickness

Doug Hendren adds to our legacy of protest music, one of the most memorable parts of our efforts to reform our culture. When Doug decided to retire his medical scalpel, he picked up another kind of scalpel: a musical scalpel to do surgery on the evils he perceives in our society.  His targets are today’s corporate approach to Energy, Food & Water, Climate, Wall Street criminality, Inequality, and bogus Democracy.  At http://musicalscalpel.com, Doug posts his original protest songs along with videos exposing the problems he is addressing.  Some of the lyrics are “parodies” of familiar tunes, a la The Capital Steps, and others are set to his own original music.

Several of them we will play for you in this episode with his background stories attached, including: BETTER KEEP IT CLEAN, about access to clean water; THE FREE MARKET, how economists distort the word ‘free’; REAL PEOPLE HAVE HEART, how to tell people and corporations apart; WILLIE SUTTON'S BLUES, about Wall Street criminality; NATIONAL SECURITY BLUES, exploring real security; FOR BIDDER 70, on Tim DeChristopher’s civil disobedience; and LONG HAS THE EARTH, on climate change.  We think you will agree with us that Doug Hendren has an incisive mind and musical scalpel.
