HISTORY OF THE SPOKEN WORD

Entertainment Worldwide Network 619-639-4709 “SPOKEN WORD FOREVER” and tonight's show is “History of the Spoken Word”. Spoken word as we know it today did not evolve until the late 1980’s early 1990’s. Though it is quite similar to the “Beats” in the 1960’s where they were not accepted by the academic community and they used poetry as an avenue to discuss their perception and confusion in society. Though the Beats were an all white male, oral culture community the Spoken Word has evolved to include all diversities. Spoken Word of the 1980’s is believed to derive from Rap music competitions where there was a need for something called “Poetry Slams.”  Poetry Slams is where Spoken Word Poets would square off in a competitive duel. Though it was only seen in the US in the 1980’s, Slam Poetry events have been popular in India for centuries. Spoken Word is distinctively different from Rap as Rap incorporates rhythm and melody; however one of the common denominators of Spoken Word Poetry and Rap is that they both incorporate Protest in their words. Spoken word was accepted by the Colleges in the early 1980’s as the “New Wave of Performing Arts.”  The Nuyorican Poets Café located in New York City is one of the earliest venues where Poets could speak about the wrongs of our society. Since then Spoken Word has been used as a forum to express views anywhere from religion to gender and anything in between.
