Doctor Prepper CPR

Host: James Talmage Stevens

Guest: Stephen Coombes

Author James Stevens talks with family man and professional copywriter in the preparedness industry Stephen Coombes.

Mr. Coombes explains in this interview that most of the organizations selling product in the preparedness industry do it base on reaching out to peoples fears.  As he explains, fear is a powerful emotion that will drive many sales (fear of the unknown, fear of deprivation, etc.).  However, he believes the right approach is much different.

As a teen in the eighties he saw the made for TV movie “The Day After”, and says, “It scared the pants off of me.”

He goes on to explain that later when married and with a family he learned of a predicted eminent event that was going to take out the power grid.  That night, in fear, he went to the local WalMart that was open all night and emptied their bank account buying everything he could afford.

Nothing Happened.  And as he goes on, “My heart was in the right place – wanting to protect my family.  But there I was, Chicken Little, looking like an idiot.”

This event changed his preparedness focus from being fear based to being knowledge and faith based.  Stephen explains that fear is, “I’m being driven by an immediate threat.”  Whereas being “Faith based is – I have a family and I’m going to do the best I can with the means that I have to take care of them.”

“I changed from being fear driven to purpose drive.”
