Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener

Water and Soil Fertility

What do you do about providing water for your garden and orchard if the electricity fails or the pump dies or the well goes dry? How do you plant so as to achieve maximum resilience toward such disasters? How do you maintain soil productivity and fertility if you have no access at all to imported amendments? What can you experiment with and learn now that will most help you if you ever need to garden without buying or importing anything?

Please join with us tonight as Carol and Jim discuss what to do about water and fertility when the going gets really tough.

Carol Deppe is the embodiment of The Resilient Gardener. She has a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University, and has been experimenting with crops and gardening in Corvallis, Oregon since 1979.  She is a freelance plant breeder specializing in developing public-domain crops for Oregon growing conditions, sustainable agriculture, and human survival.  She teaches the need for sustainable “hard-times” gardens that produce large quantities of staples rather than the common manicured good-time salad bowl gardens.

Her writing includes The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-reliance in Uncertain Times, Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties: The Gardener’s and Farmer’s Guide to Plant Breeding and Seed Saving.
