It’s All in Your Mind:  Emotional Preparedness

Much of the focus in emergency preparedness is on tangible assets and practical skills, which are essential, but emerging research is starting to reveal the vital role mental health plays in weathering adversity.  After noting the role of mental resilience during and after crisis situations, Dave Heaton developed a training program to help individuals understand their own mental and emotional responses and how they can purposely develop mental resilience.  In this program, we’ll explore some of the myths and realities of how people react to trauma or disaster and how we can help ourselves and others prepare for and heal from life's trials.

Dave Heaton is the Public Information Officer for the Southwest Utah Public Health Department, which includes the duties of spokesperson, media relations, information campaigns, research, and magazine editor. He worked in the mental health field for 12 years where he gained expertise in chronic mental illness, mood disorders, crisis intervention, and therapy with individuals, couples, and groups. Dave has a Master of Social Work from the University of Utah and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). He continues to be involved in mental health as a clinical supervisor for a private practice and adjunct faculty for Southern Utah University. Dave teaches the Disaster Psychology Unit for the Iron County CERT training. He lives in Cedar City, Utah, with his wife and children.
