Linguistic diversity and multiplicity must be viewed as an asset and not an impediment to national development. National and individual identity gain immensely from the promotion and use of Zambian languages and it should be mandatory for Zambian languages to be taught in all schools. Various linguistic studies have shown that knowledge of more than one language has substantial cognitive benefits. There are a number of Zambian languages that are currently severely endangered and with their loss will also come loss of cultural heritage and identity.
