A man who allegedly faked his kidnapping in Nairobi has been arrested.

The man is said to have called his friends and relatives and told them he had been kidnapped at the weekend and a ransom of Sh50,000 was needed.

He told those that he called that the kidnappers wanted the money sent to his mobile phone account.

Within a short while, nearly Sh40,000 had been raised and sent to the man’s phone account.

And after two days of his alleged kidnap, the suspect went to an M-pesa operator in the city and withdrew the money sent to him. It was then that police who had been monitoring the events arrested him in the city.

CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro said on Monday they had established the suspect wanted to raise money for his planned wedding.

"He has told officers he wanted to raise money for his wedding next month. But that is a wrong way of doing things," said Muhoro.
