Good morning an welcome to Get Health Now with Denise Thomson, Certified Health and Wellness Coach, nurse, fitness trainer, educator, speaker and author.

With so many wild fires in Northern California, Southern California and other places and Christmas almost at our door, what preventative measures can we take to be safe?

First, I want to stress some of the Health Risks of breathing smoke from the California wildfires.

Airquality is very poor and dangerous.

Wood smoke contains a mixture of microscopic droplets and particles and invisible gases that spread downwind from the fire source. (Only a few studies on side effects of wild fires)

Most studies relate to controlled fires, or simple fires originating in labs, kitchens..

Tips on how to be safe druing those fires: close windows, doors, apply weather seal.. go to friends and family away from smoke, use portable HEPA FILTERS, candles and airfresheners do NOTHING to clean the air.

Some sources of fires during the Christmas Season are from the lights on the Christmas trees, electrical overload, candles, wreaths, baking, cooking, smoking.

Tip: Be awake and mentally alert and present at all times when you turn on the lights, light a candle. Always turn them off before leaving the room at bedtime.

Have a water spray bottle next to the Christmas tree, the wreath, candles, etc. so you can extinguish the fire immediately before it gets out of control.

Only light tree lights appropriate for that tree and candles when present.
