Dawn reads The Domestic Manners of the Americans by Frances Milton Trollope. Known as Fanny Trollope 1780--1863, she was the mother of author Anthony Trollope and a contemporary of Jane Austen, although they never met. Fanny was given to exuberance and a spirit of adventure; on the 4th of November 1827, Fanny, accompanied by her son and two daughters, sailed from London and after a favourable, though somewhat tedious six week ocean voyage, arrived on Christmas-day at the mouth of the Mississippi.
