So far, we have been using the word “purpose” to denote the overall goal of your life, your reason for living. Now, I want to introduce a new word to help you get ahold of this concept even better. That word is the word “mission.” Business experts often advise that companies differentiate between their purpose and their mission. They say the purpose is why the company exists, and the mission is what the company does to carry out the why of the company. This principle applies to your personal life as well.
In 1955, when Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California, labor relations expert Van Arsdale France was tasked with inspiring the theme park’s employees to work on behalf of the company’s purpose. Yes, even a theme park has a purpose. The theme of Disneyland was “to create happiness.” France told workers, “You may park cars, clean up the place, sweep the place, work graveyard, and everything else, but whatever you do is contributing to creating happiness for others.” That is the difference between a purpose and a mission.
