PERGAMUM: THE POLITICAL CHURCH (PART 2)

Pergamum was an incredible city. Pillared temples, public buildings, and massive fortifications sat atop the acropolis. And above it all was the great Temple of Zeus, king of the gods. When Attalus III of Pergamum died in 133 BC, he bequeathed the city to the Romans, and they made it their political capital in Asia. The local library was one of the greatest in the ancient world, boasting a collection of 200,000 volumes. 

Pergamum was also known for its famous healing and medical center. Here, religious meditation, dream interpretation, snake handling, and medical arts were combined for healing purposes. The Sacred Way led from the Asclepion, built in honor of the god of healing, toward the acropolis, which rose a thousand feet above the plain. Near the summit stood the immense altar to Zeus. A short distance away was the elegant Temple of Athena (Greek goddess of war). But more than anything else, the imperial cult of Caesar worship dominated all else at Pergamum.
