155,000 people affected by earthquake in China. According to UB Alert, local Chinese authorities reported that over 155,000 people have been affected by the 6.6-magnitude quake that rocked Xin-jiang province over the weekend. The number of injured victims has risen to 52 while about 48,000 people had been evacuated after the tremor jolted a mountainous area. The quake also caused 7,500 homes to collapse and damaged 64,000 more.

Turkey scrambles jets as Syrian aircraft flies close to border. According to Reuters, Turkish armed forces said on Monday that they scrambled six F-16 fighter jets in three separate incidents responding to Syrian military helicopters approaching the border on Sunday. It was the second time in as many days Turkish jets were launched in response to Syrian helicopters flying near the border and comes after a Turkish reconnaissance plane was shot down by Syria late last month. Two helicopters had come within 2.5 miles and one had come within 2 miles of the border.

Food inflation feared as US crop prices surge. According to The Telegraph, worries about world food prices are increasing, stoked by a 10 percent rise in US corn and wheat prices in just a week. The jump was driven by the current spell of hot, dry weather in the American Midwest, which is suffering record-breaking temperatures in some areas. Similar weather back in 1988, creating one of the most damaging droughts in US history, cut the country's corn production by more than 30 percent.
