This is leap year and we have an extra 24 hours…what will you do with your 24 hours?

Here’s a thought…exposure.  Expose yourself to a person, group of people or way of life different from your own or your culture. Exposure is simply the “fact or condition of being affected by something or experiencing something” (merriam-webster, 2016).

You might even consider selecting a person from a group or culture that you think you are familiar with and know all about.  We are all aware of certain stereotypes about various cultures and people.  Maybe even chuckled about a few of them but when you actually take a moment and consider your true understanding of different cultures and ethnic groups including your capacity to view people in their true self, if you can’t honestly say your understanding is based on first-hand experience then you are shortchanging yourself.

It is easy to take second hand information, run with it as if it is fact, and define an entire group of people. However, that is neither the smartest nor the most mature thing to do.

Go beyond yourself, add to your current base of knowledge have lunch, coffee, take a walk or simply strike up a conversation with someone “different” than you.

Guess what you may find out that exposure is reciprocal.  As you are learning something about someone, you may have the opportunity to share something about your culture.

Let us Come to the Table and Talk about current events and cultural exposure.
