Playing every thing indie,all styles.On Jan. 8, around 10:00 a.m. local time, Gabrielle Giffords - the congresswoman for Arizona's eighth district - was shot in the head at close range while attending a political event in Tucson. The bullet passed directly through her head, and the gunman, believed to be 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, then opened fire. The shooter injured 20 people, killing six. Griffords survived the attack, and has regained consciousness, but remains in critical condition. "Congresswoman Giffords was having a town hall type of meeting outside in a kind of a strip-mall situation outside Safeway Grocery Store," said Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik at a press conference. Police and paramedics arrived within minutes. "There was no indication of any problems, but at about 10 minutes after 10:00 a.m. a gunman approached and started shooting. Congresswoman Giffords was shot once in the head [. . .] the surgeon is cautiously optimistic that she will survive." The dead include nine-year-old Christina Greene and Federal Judge John Roll. According to witnesses, the shooter used a semi-automatic Glock pistol with an extended magazine - which police say he purchased legally at a gun store. After shooting Griffords, the shooting became "indiscriminate". Police have speculated that the shooter intended to kill himself after the shooting, but was unable to after being tackled by a pair of civilians. Local police - in conjunction with the FBI - are still investigating possible accomplices. One early suspect turned out to have been Loughner's taxi driver. Loughner has reportedly refused to speak, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. He made his first court appearance on Jan. 9.
