Maya Carter has been Director of Aquatics at University of South Carolina Upstate for 14 years. She started her recreational journey at 15 by becoming a lifeguard and has remained in this industry ever since. 

She loves working with the water because it teaches skills that can be life skills at any age. She became interested in aquatics after learning to swim at age 8.

She's received national recognition for her skills as a teacher, aquatics director, and coach. The US Water Fitness Association named her one of the top aquatic directors in the nation in 2000. Before joining USC Upstate, Maya was Aquatics Supervisor for Trotwood-Madison High School in Dayton, OH.

Maya is an Instructor Trainer for American Red Cross and holds instructor certification in CPR, 1st Aid, Lifeguarding, and Water Safety. She has an M.A. in Education from Union Institute and University, an M.A. in Management from Antioch University Midwest, and a B.S. in Sports Exercise and Management from University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, OH. 

A Life Member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., she is Committee Chair for Swim 1922 in her sorority's local chapter. The Swim 1922 initiative partners with USA Swimming to effect change and influence the community through clinics on water safety and swimming techniques.
