This year's "open enrollment" for Medicare started October 15 (it ends December 7). The annual sign-up period triggers a promotional stampede by private insurers, who clog consumer mailboxes with offers for dozens of seemingly identical Medicare options. *With the first crop of baby boomers turning 65 this year, more Americans than ever -- an estimated 10,000 people a day -- are becoming eligible for Medicare and being bombarded by such appeals.* Harriet Hoffman started getting these kinds of questions a few years ago from friends and friends of friends who knew my background -- 20 years spent creating senior services programs and securing federal funding for community health centers and other not-for-profits….and I’m also a Medicare recipient. My callers figured they could depend on me to decipher the jargon, help them evaluate the options and offer some well-founded, *impartial *advice.
