[From the Greek suffixes -ismos: the action of doing something, and from Greek -isma: the result of such action.] (general) The action or practice of doing something (terrorism, patriotism). (general) An instance of a certain kind of action or practice (e.g., witticism, Americanism). (general) The condition of being a certain way (barbarism, alcoholism). (general) A theory, doctrine, movement, or approach in philosophy, religion, politics, science, the arts, or a related discipline. Examples from philosophy include consequentialism, emotivism, Epicureanism, and syncretism. When people talk about "isms," they are referring to some "distinctive doctrine, theory, system, or practice" like liberalism, communism, conservatism, or pacifism. The suffix "ism" also means a "state, condition, attribute, or quality" like pauperism, astigmatism, heroism, anachronism, or metabolism. An ism may assume that the generalization applies to an individual state of though; state of being or the doctrine believes that motivates their actions. If you are confused, believe me its confusing to me to. Friday night I have a co-host JOSSIE, who would like to explore this though. Tune in with an open mind and lets see if we con define this suffix. TUNE IN FRIDAY NIGHT 4/07/10 LEARN OR MAYBE GIVE SOME VALUABLE INFORMATION THAT MAY HELP SOMEONE ELSE.
