Otis Williams, one of the five founding members of R&B kings The Temptations—who'd go on to release 14 No. 1 singles—recalls how that name came to be. "When we signed with Motown, we had a name—The Elgins. But then we found out there was another group out there by that name," he tells The Love Zone USA host Mike T. "We were standing outside of Motown, and a young man named Bill Mitchell—who worked for the label—and we were in front of the building shouting out some names and he said 'Temptations!' and I said, 'I like that.' So I asked the guys and [fellow Temptation] Paul Williams said, 'Hey, Otis, a name is whatever we make it.' So Bill called up Motown's legal department and put the name in our contract.
