Since becoming a Pagan in the 1970s, Ceisiwr Serith has published five books and many articles on Paganism, as well as presenting papers at academic conferences at Harvard, UCLA, and Berkeley. In all of this, he has always attempted to blend the spiritual and the academic. It is his contention, in fact, that an authentic spiritual life begins with an authentic understanding of the world, and that an authentic modern Paganism requires an accurate understanding of ancient Paganism. He has therefore spent much time learning and studying the academic way of approaching Paganism, and the academic sources of our knowledge of ancient times, without losing sight of the fact that this knowledge has to resonate with modern sensibilities and the spiritual life if it is going to be relevant. His constant goal has been to bridge the two worlds, and to serve as a conduit between an academic understanding and a spiritual one. Serith is a member of Ár nDraíocht Féin, a modern druidic organization whose motto, “Why not Excellence?” continues to be a guiding principle for him. Among his interests have been Wicca, Mithraism, and Proto-Indo-European language and culture. His books include Deep Ancestors: Practicing the Religion of the Proto-Indo-Europeans, A Pagan Ritual Prayer Books, and Back to the Beginnings: Reinventing Wicca. He has an article coming out in the fall/winter 2012 issue of the Journal of Indo-European Studies. More information on him and his work can be found at www.ceisiwrserith.com.
