I was born in Minot, North Dakota on 4-22-66 was immediately diagnosed with Lumbar 5 Mylomeningeocile Spina Bifida.  I was immediately flown to Wilford Hall Hospital on Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas where doctors closed up my spine. When I was one month old, they inserted a shunt in my head that drained the spinal fluid into my heart.  At the age 3, the shunt was to be revised to drain into my plural cavity.  After my family moved to Texas, things went really well, I went to physical therapy and learned to walk.  In 1978 the school said I needed my wheelchair because walking with my braces used too much energy.  That ended my walking.  Three years ago, I got the chance to walk again. I had lap band surgery and eventually lost enough weight that I could stand up.  After my weight loss, I began going to physical therapy and eventually learned to walk again.
