Returning to school at the end of the summer is a highly charged time for kids. It can be a roller-coaster of emotions for kids as their excitement, fears, insecurities, hopes and dreams collide. These powerful emotions are paired with with a flurry of activity surrounding the developing identity of the child: new clothes, new friends, new teachers, and new experiences.
As parents and caregivers, we must attune ourselves to the unique needs of our child, read their cues, determine their needs and empower them to step forward into this intense and complex new experience with self-trust, tools to stay connected to self, and tools to rebalance the self when needed. As well, our job is to provide the deep emotional support and compassion kids need to traverse the highs and lows this transition is sure to bring.
The wonderful thing is that we are, then, unwittingly facilitating the development of a deep sense of self-awareness within our children as we help and encourage them to stay in touch with their own unique needs, feelings, personal choices and inner navigational equipment.
