Kristin Ulland is the mother of a daughter who was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She has a very informative blog at borderlinefamilies.com where she writes about her journey with her daughter and what she has learned from all of her experience. Just recently, Kristin has become, as she describes it, "anti-psychiatry" but not anti-psychology. Kristin is not into the "medical model of psychiatry" (biopsychiatry) or drug "treatment" anymore. Listen to Kristin explain why in this interview. My daughter has borderline personality disorder. I plan to share the story of how we struggled with her illness while searching for help. In dealing with this I found that borderline is not only treatment-resistant but that it is often misdiagnosed. I was frustrated by the unreliable treatments offered and the lack of discussion. On her Blog, Kristin's Goal is to talk about: 1.Pros and cons of medications most often prescribed 2.Pros and cons of talk therapy 3.DBT 4.The Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde behavior impossible to describe to outsiders 5.The rewriting of history by the borderline 6.The effect of splitting behavior on the family dynamics 7.The constant anticipation of impending outbursts and more ... Kristin describes herself as someone with an "Insider’s Knowledgeand an Outsider’s Mind" I have an insider’s knowledge of the grim world of mental illness but an outsider’s mind. For twenty-five years I have been in the trenches with my daughter using trial and error and an unfathomable amount of endurance to help her find peace from the debilitating symptoms of borderline personality disorder. She has done DBT, CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy, EMDR, ect.. She has been over-medicated, under-medicated, removed from medication abruptly and suffered severe withdrawal symptoms. She has tried every generation of drugs on the market and had only sporadic, short-lived positive results. Mostly, nothing has worked.
