When we speak it says much about us and it hints much about the person or audience to whom we are speaking.
Today, we're hoping you'll join us for a discussion of words that have changed or added meaning in your lifetime!! My favorite? All of the ways I can now refer to the $11.00 I have in my pocket (which probably won't be there by thetime the show airs!)
What drives the drastic changes in our patterns of speech; in the words we (don't) use; in our delivery, cadence, and enunciation?
Call in. Tell AGenda Benda's Blog Talk Radio how your vernacular serves you or doesn't. Is code-switching a talent, a coping style, a natural occurence in our use of language, a cop-out, or a practice that compromises others' trust in us ? Does it feel "phoney" to use formal English in a coroporate business meeting and Christianity-laden (i.e., black church) references with your religious family? If you work within the black LGBTIQ community by day and tutor affluent Jewish teens in the evening, what changes in your verbal presentation and why? AGenda Benda is excited to learn from our listeners more about the economic and cultural role/impact of language -especially colloquialism and vernacular- in your daily lives.
Call in! WEDNESDAYS 4/27, 5/4, and 5/18/11 from 12 noon-12:30, and give your hosts Cole or Akemi some brain.
