‘Tedi Robinson (aka Son Of Pearl, The Massalina Kid) is an American Neo Soul songwriter, bassist, jazz composer, producer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical roots run deep. Born and raised in Panama City, Florida, music is part of his creative DNA.
His father, Willie Eugene Robinson, was a percussionist for the R&B duo Sam and Dave. His uncle, William ‘Scoop’ Waters, played jazz guitar with the Soul Aces and Fire. His mother, Emma Pearl (the inspiration for his musical moniker), and grandmother, ‘Belle of the South’, Annie Bell Puritt, taught him to appreciate vocals from their gospel roots.
He continued honing his craft as a percussionist and keyboard player. While attending Florida State University, he began to work regularly as a session musician. Always elevating his craft, Tedi plays 4,5, and 8 string bass. He created a musical style he coined, ‘MellowFunkism’. Where the funk is ‘mellow’ and the ‘ism’ is the rhythm. ‘Mellowfunkism’ fans are called ‘Mellows’.
He’s been called one of the most prolific artists around. He has worked with international producer Gundy Keller of the Roland Music company, Winston Johnson (Marlon Jackson & Tease), D.Trent Kelly, and Flight Boy Music of Baltimore, Maryland.
Although Tedi ‘Son of Pearl’ Robinson, is a funkster at heart, one can detect odes to blues and world music on his newest offerings Hot Summer Nights feat D.Trent Kelly and Friday Night Blues feat T. Bluesy and also Black Licorice IceCream feat.T. Bluesy. He loves the country and a hint of rock in his musical creations. He often adds his own vocal talents. His music is designed to take the listener on an odyssey away from the stress of the moment and into a world where the funk is mellow.
