The Corporate mainstream media has a long tainted history, along with the US Government, of labeling, repackaging, and vilifying some of the Black Communities more effective and progressive leaders. The question should be an obvious one. The whole concept of Black Power has been always been very threatening to “mainstream” white America, especially those who revel in the white supremacy, institutional racism, and a disproportionate “power” structure. Via the Counter Intelligence Program the US government resorted to extreme measures to try to destroy individuals and organizations such as Stokley Carmichael (Kwame Ture) and the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. If your only get your news from mainstream outlets you may not know that there are strong, well organized, and effective Black Leaders throughout America. These Leaders are using all of their resources to empower their communities which still remain governmentally neglected. This week we feature one of the many leaders. Hs name is Hussayn ‘Maniac’ Bey. Hussayn ‘Maniac’ Bey is the Executive Director and co-founder of the community based organization known as BCF (Building Communities and Families). Hussayn Bey and several other CRIPS and BLOODS united to form BCF (Blood Crip Foundation) in 1988. Hussayn learned at an early age that there was more to gang’s then just violence and crime. He learned about the power in organization, unity, and shared sacrifice. They were able to affect positive change throughout the County of Los Angeles. Their effect was profound in schools and neighborhoods that were subjected to poor academic achievement, economic exclusion, gangs, drugs and violence. Their collective effort has since been adapted in similar communities across the United States and abroad. Hussayn has Appeared in numerous documentaries most notably HBO’s ‘Bastards of the Party’ and the upcoming ‘Made In America’, The Baron Davis Project.
