Perry “DOC” Black was born and raised in the great state of Louisiana in 1965.  In 1983, two weeks after graduating high school, he left for his first tour in the Army.  Perry hated the Army life and left the Army 3 ½ years later and became a steel fabricator in Louisville KY.  After working for 5 years as a civilian, after losing his job due to involvement with union organizing.  He then spent the next six months partying and one morning he woke up staring at the ceiling and decided to return to the Army.  Perry decided he wanted to be an Airborne Ranger and was lucky enough to get a Ranger contract.  Ironically enough, Perry had never heard of the 75th Ranger Regiment and was unaware of the destiny awaiting him in becoming such an influential member of the Regiment.

His career as a Ranger started when he arrived in 3/75th in July of 91.  He is a combat veteran of the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia in 93, which is the inspiration for the famous book “Black Hawk Down”, written by author Mark Bowden, and movie directed by Ridley Scott.  Doc served in 3/75th, from 91-97.  He then went to Task Force 160, where he worked as a Special Operations Flight Medic from 97-99.  He returned to his beloved Ranger Regiment, at 1/75th, from 99-01 as BN Senior Medic.  He was then selected to be the Joint Special Operations Medic Course, Ranger Liaison.  He served as Trauma instructor and later became the first Ranger NCOIC of the Special Operations Combat Medic Course and retired from active duty in 2007.  Some of his awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor 3-Oct 1993, MSM x 6, numerous ARCOM’s and AAM’s, EFMB, CFMB, Ranger Tab and Aviation Crewmember Wings.  His military courses and certifications include the US Army Ranger School, SERE-C, JSOMTC, Jumpmaster, NREMT-P, Scout Swimmer, JOTC, PLDC, BNCOC and ANCOC.
