In 8 Paul talks about mere knowledge as no good he says. We must APPLY what we learn, not just do book learning.  If I know to do good but withhold doing it, that is a sin of omission.  Later Paul says, love covers a multitude of sins and the word for love is CHARITY. So if our knowledge or understanding is void of love, then we are not yet fully walking in truth. He gives guidelines for those coming out of idolatry.

Paul was also being accused to the brethren apparently from this beginning. So He starts out in 9 defending his right as an apostle of Christ. He says the other apostles brought wives including Peter. He talks about financial right as the worker is worthy of his wages, to be fed. Obviously people are talking about it for him to defend his position.
