How can we start on our own transformation to systems thinking? I ask someone who knows: Bob Browne, author of "Sys-Tao."
Bob Browne didn't just inherit the Great Plains Coca-Cola franchise, he had to pay for it at 1980 leveraged buy-out prices. When the traditional geographic expansion strategy collided with an explosion of product and packaging combinations, the strain was felt throughout the enterprise. Recognizing that the existing strategy could not meet the modern demands, Bob began to look for alternatives, finding the solution in a more "organic" philosophical tradition, characterized as Japanese Kaizen principles, but really originated by the American quality philosopher C. Edwards Deming. Browne completely transformed GPCC according to a Kaizen-Deming system that suited GPCC's particular circumstances. The transformation was a great and lasting success.
