On Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. eastern time U.S.A. I will have the pleasure of speaking with Harry Hovakimian. Harry was born in 1968 in Baku Azerbaijan (former Soviet Republic) At 7 he entered music school. Since a child he always listened to American Jazz music, which was strictly prohibited from listening in public, on TV a Radio. He use to listen at nights on Short Wave radio the Voice of America the Jazz Program hosted by Willis Ganover. In 1986 entered Music College (The Conservatory) but in 1988 his studies were interrupted by Armenian massacres in Azerbaijan, where many Armenians lost their lives and properties. His grandmother was killed. His family moved to Russia where he worked in the club playing music and awaited his invitation from the American Embassy for his interview. In 1991 he had graduated from Armenian State Conservatory named after Gomidas (The Statue on Jefferson is Gomidas) with Master Degree in Arts of Music. His family was granted the Refugee Status and they legally entered the USA. In 1993 he was accepted to Erie Chamber Orchestra where he was played in The First Violin Group. He also was a part in duo with an amazing vocalist and guitarist, Marty O'Connor. In 1997 he participated in The Erie Jazz and Blues Festival and had a pleasure to be a part of Mike Boothman’s group (Trinidad). In 1998 he moved to Detroit and ever since then, work as a music teacher at AGBU Alec and Marie Manoogian School in Southfield. From year 2000 he has played at The Fiddler Restaurant, which is the heart and soul of the local Russian community. He is working on a soundtrack for the movie, The Puppeteer. It's an American Russian project, where he play's a role. He teaches privately violin, classical guitar. You can find Harry Hovakiminan on you tube.
