The United States Supreme Court has ruled before that " [c]itizenship has its responsibilities as well as its privileges, and in time of war the burden is always heavier." That message has always been a part of the conditions of U.S. citizenship, and yet we forget it often.

The price of being a citizen of the United States may not be seen as a higher burden than non-democratic nations which can imprison or burden its citizens on one man's command. But is that true when a democracy (a free nation) can legally and justifiably strip certain rights and dignities away by the vote of its elected officials?
