From Darkness to Light Jim Jones – Messenger of Death Part 1

On Nov. 18, 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana, more than 900 followers of the Rev. Jim Jones died in a murder suicide after he ordered them to drink cyanide-laced grape punch. Five others were shot dead at a nearby airstrip. The incident in Guyana ranks among the largest mass murder - suicides in history, and was the single greatest loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until the events of September 11, 2001. Among the dead was Congressman Leo Ryan who remains the only Congressman assassinated in the line of duty in the history of the United States.  The Jonestown massacre forever changed the World and how we view Religious Leaders who all too often become Cult Leaders. And still over 30 years later the lessons of Jonsestown remain with us. In a famous portrait – the dead victims can be seen sprawled across the grounds with a mural overhead with the words
“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
