DAYTONA BEACH — After 27 years as a Daytona Beach police officer, Craig Capri was named Friday as the top cop of the law enforcement agency where he's spent his career.

Capri, known as "Spike" to his friends, becomes the city's 16th police chief.

"I'm extremely humbled and honored," Capri said Friday. "I've worked here 27 years and to be chosen to lead this organization after Chief Chitwood. It's an honor to be considered on the same level as Chief Chitwood.

"This is the only job I've ever wanted," Capri added.

Mike Chitwood was chief for 10 years and left in November after he was elected sheriff of Volusia County. Capri has long been a protege of Chitwood's, being tapped to become a captain by the former police chief when Capri was a lieutenant in 2010.
