CONGRESSMAN TODD AKIN & CLARK DURANT, U.S. SENATE CANDIDATES

Clark Durant Founded the Cornerstone Schools in 1991 to provide an excellent education to children in urban Detroit, creating an alternative to government schools. He was named by President Reagan, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1984, to serve on the Board of the Legal Services Corporation. He served as Chairman for 4 years. He challenged both the spending culture of Washington and the monopoly of the legal profession, which had denied poor people access to justice.  Clark has developed creative ways to generate millions of dollars for urban education, including unique partnerships with Arnold Palmer, the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Pistons, and the Children’s Scholarship Fund.

As a U.S. Congressman, Todd serves on three committees: Armed Services, Science and Technology and Budget. As a Member of Congress, he is committed to promoting the principles of our Founders, the free enterprise system and the traditional values of the American family. Todd has also taken a leading role in issues related to national security and international affairs.

In the 112th Congress, Todd was chosen as Chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. He also joined the House Budget Committee, where he advocates responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

In the 107th Congress, Todd was joined by U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello (D-IL) in offering the Clean Coal Initiative amendment to the Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) Act. This Amendment authorized an extensive program for clean coal research and development at the Department of Energy and included provisions for public-private partnerships to upgrade existing coal-fired power plants in accordance with current clean coal technology.
