The Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative: Summit County

A 2006 national report indicated that an average of 26,000 children across the country are placed in detention centers facilities on a daily basis. That study reported that Ohio was placing youth in detention at a rate higher than two-thirds of the other states. In August 2010, five counties in Ohio began to implement the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). JDAI is a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation. By applying its strategies, jurisdictions have demonstrated that they can safely reduce reliance on secure detention and generally strengthen their juvenile justice system. Judge Linda Tucci Teodosio, Summit County Juvenile Court and Steve Stahl, Summit County Assistant Juvenile Court Administrator, will be guests on this episode of Spotlight on Youth to discuss Summit County's effort in reducing the county's reliance on detention and share lessons learned to date from their implementation of JDAI.
