March 12th marked the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America. Join Scandalous Women as we talk about the organization's remarkable founder Juliette 'Daisy' Gordon Low, intrepid, charming and indiosyncratic.
Born just as the Civil War started, Juliette or 'Crazy Daisy' as she was known fell in love with a bad boy, the dashing and dangerous Willy Low. But the marriage was doomed from the start, a stray grain of rice lodged in the bride's ear leading to hearing loss. Willie's wandering eye led to heartache and loneliness. His death left her widowed, wealthy but wounded.
Searching for a purpose, Juliette found it in Robert Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Daisy decided to import the Girl Guides to her hometown of Savannah, GA. Her goal was to teach useful domestic & career-related skills while also showing girls how to have fun!
